Perhaps I should have made it clear that I'm just spitballing what kind
of workflows we should keep in mind with this stuff. I'm not suggesting
we need to add support for everything right away. Just that we should
take steps toward a sane architecture for all this stuff. I'm not sure
what that would be though

Oh yeah that could work, assuming 436m is the most capable. Which it
is, last time I looked, since it support HANC and both 8-bit and 1-bit
data. It might require the right UL in mxfenc as you say
