Needing to ask somebody for getting admission is too high a hurdle. It will cause many to walk away without ever asking. Right now, we may think "it's easy, one just needs to ask". But for people outside, this creates the appearance of being a closed circle which is intending to isolate its realm.

A complicated sign-up process is totally fine as long as it's self-serviced, and I think we should be able to make it sufficiently inconvenient to keep spammers away - except very dedicated ones, but these might also jump over the "ask-somebody" bar.
