To the extent that the people who are automatically selected committed (most of) their own patches, they should have known that that would cause them to become GA members. There is indeed however a problem that somebody whose patches get merged by a third party could be induced into the GA without even knowing. Actually, kinda yes? The difference though is that those people aren't subject to being voted into the GA.
