[FFmpeg-devel] Hardware purchase request: HDR monitor

Hi,

As some of you might know, I develop HDR->SDR tone mapping methods under
the libplacebo project, which is also available in FFmpeg as a video
filter (vf_libplacebo) and to my knowledge currently represents the
highest quality method of tone-mapping HDR to SDR with a filter.

I would like to further improve the quality of these algorithms, but I
am running into a lack of a proper HDR monitor to test on - most of my
existing work is done by a combination of guesswork, user feedback, and
staring at mathematical curves in a void.

I have done some research into the current state of the market and
determined that the current best compromise for an affordable,
HDR-capable OLED desktop monitor is the Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 Gaming
Monitor. (Which, despite the "gaming" name, accurately tracks PQ up to
~1000 nits peak at 2%, has wide gamut coverage, and a decent enough
resolution thus representing an ideal budget monitor for my workflow)

The current price on Amazon is listed as 1329 EUR:

I think purchasing this monitor is OK and I would also prefer the money is
spent with a reputable supplier like Amazon because they have much better
customer service in case of problems.
And actually Amazon is now matching the price at electronic4you.

Approved on my side, maybe let's wait a few days before proceeding
with the purchase/request.

This is a good point since we want to favor reliability in order to
avoid delivery/support issues.

Looking at the ratings on the 6 shops which sell this monitor for 1299 on
https://geizhals.de/samsung-odyssey-oled-g8-g85sb-ls34bg850suxen-a2829434.html#offerlist
amazon has the worst rating

Also from my personal experience with amazon, they are convenient and easy
to return items to within the return period. The consequence of that is its
also easy to receive used or dirty items as new occasionally.
When it came to warranty and repairs (outside the returns period) my
personal experience with amazon is not so good though
(the whole process felt intentionally cumbersome)

Amazon also doesn't accept many payment methods (Vorkasse, PayPal) and
doesn't have the item in question in the warehouse, which are two
additional reasons not to use it.

If there is no further objection, am I free to order from the linked
shop (electronic4you.de)? Is there a special process I have to go
through?

You can proceed, then you'll send a refund request to SPI using the usual
process.
